Halloween Writing Activities for Middle School – Elements of literature Review
We start this fun Halloween writing activity by reviewing the elements of literature. In small groups, students use the included handouts to go over important details about setting, plot, character and conflict. Many of the students are already familiar with these concepts, but I always find that a little review helps the rest of the lesson run a whole lot smoother.

STORY WRITING CARDS
Next, students take turns choosing from a variety of plot, setting, character, and conflict cards. These cards have spooky images and details to help spark story ideas. I find the cards to be super beneficial for students who struggle with what to write about. Having the cards directly in front of them really helps to get the creative juices flowing.
Later, I give students some time to discuss their cards and story ideas with a partner. It can be really helpful for students to have a buddy to bounce their story ideas off of.
Spooky story Planning
After brainstorming their ideas, students begin planning out their stories. Using their cards, students write descriptive details about their characters, plot, setting, and conflicts. The templates included in this resource really help to structure the process, making for more organized final stories.
Story Writing
Finally, students use the included writing templates to write their spooky stories. Having the planning pages to refer back to when writing helps the process run smoothly. I am always blown away by their creative final products!
