Interactive Read Aloud Tips

Through my last three posts on the Interactive Read Aloud, I hope I have inspired you to try them out in your classroom. In my previous posts, I talked about what Interactive Read Alouds are, key planning tips, and the benefits of introducing them in your classroom. Today I am here to give you some quick tips and tricks to make sure your Interactive Read Alouds are a giant success.

How can I make sure I am making the most of my Interactive Read Alouds?
Follow these tips to help you implement a successful Read Aloud with your students.
•Purposefully engage students in making powerful connections.
•Choose books from a variety of genres and on a variety of topics. Look for high interest books with rich language and deep layers of meaning.
•Purposefully model reading processes and comprehension strategies. Think alouds are great for this!
•Provide adequate time. Students need thinking time and reflecting time, as well as ample opportunities for discussion.

What should I be doing before, during, and after reading the book with my students?
Read on for some tips and tricks for before, during, and after reading.
Before reading
•Talk about the author
•Talk about the illustrator
•Read aloud the back cover
•Check out the table of contents
•Invite students to discuss what they already know about the topic
•Make predictions about what the story will be about.
While Reading
•Go over new or interesting vocabulary words
•Think aloud as you read
•Make connections to the text
•Encourage students to interact with the book. Have them talk to a partner, make a quick sketch or note, complete a graphic organizer, or join in a class discussion.
After Reading
•Ask students to retell the story
•Have students discuss things they learned
•Check predictions and see if they were accurate.
•Complete a post-reading activity.
