Check out some engaging New Year’s teaching ideas below!
1 – New Year’s Resolutions for the Classroom
Encourage students to set personal, academic, and classroom goals for the year ahead.
•Activity Idea: Create a “Goals Garland.” Provide students with colorful paper strips where they can write one resolution for themselves, one for their learning, and one for the classroom. Connect the strips into a paper chain and display it as a visual reminder of their aspirations.
•Activity Idea: Use the goal setting template included in this package and have students record their goals – then look back on them at the end of the school year to see how far they have come.
•Discussion Starter: Talk about what makes a good goal and the importance of perseverance.
2 – Reflect and Celebrate the Past Year
Reflection helps students recognize their growth and builds confidence.
•Activity Idea: Have students complete a “Year in Review” activity where they write about some of the highs and lows of the past year. Grab a free worksheet for this activity here.
•Class Project: Create a bulletin board with their highlights and celebrate their achievements as a class.
3 – Time Capsule Fun
A time capsule is a hands-on activity that connects the present to the future.
•Activity Idea: Have students write letters to their future selves describing their current hobbies, friends, favorite books, and what they hope to accomplish by the end of the school year. Seal the letters in a decorated box and set a date to open them in June.
4 – Explore New Year’s Traditions Around the World
Teaching students about global traditions fosters cultural awareness.
•Lesson Idea: Read a short passage or watch a video about how different countries celebrate the New Year. For example, talk about the Chinese New Year, eating 12 grapes in Spain, or setting off fireworks in Australia. Check out a complete close reading unit exploring New Years traditions here.
5 – New Year’s STEM Challenges
Incorporate fun, hands-on learning activities to kick off the year. Read more about STEM challenges in the classroom here.
•Challenge Idea: “Build a Party Popper.” Provide students with materials like paper cups, balloons, and pom-poms to design their own safe and fun poppers. Test and discuss how they work.
•Teamwork Challenge: Have students work in small groups to design a “New Year’s Ball Drop” using simple machines and recycled materials.
6 – Kick Off a Kindness Challenge
Start the year with a focus on spreading kindness in and out of the classroom.
