Sirius: The Hero Dog of 911 – Hank Fellows

One of my favorite picture books for September 11th, this story recounts the real-life tale of a courageous dog. Sirius served as a patrolling companion at the World Trade Center during the events of September 11, 2001. Narrated from Sirius’s perspective, it beautifully illustrates the strength of friendship and bravery. Though Sirius ultimately sacrifices his life in the service of others, author Hank Fellows portrays the story with compassion and a triumphant spirit.

The Man in the Red Bandana – Honor Crowther Fagan

This beautiful book tells the remarkable true story of a courageous individual who saved numerous lives from the upper floors of the twin towers. This account serves as a powerful source of inspiration for children, encouraging them to embrace courage in their own lives.

Survivor Tree – Marcie Collen

This poignant and hopeful narrative gently alludes to the events of 9/11, evoking powerful emotions as readers witness the healing and growth that followed.

In this gorgeously illustrated book, the narrative unfolds around the events of 9/11 and the subsequent process of recovery. Branches of Hope – Ann Magee


This is another one of my favorite picture books for September 11th. It is an inspiring tale of The Survivor Tree, discovered at Ground Zero, and pays tribute to both New York City and its courageous, resilient citizens. The tree’s remarkable journey of rehabilitation and subsequent replanting at the Memorial serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of unity and solidarity during challenging times.

All We Have Left – Wendy Mills

In this touching picture book, a tapestry of intertwined narratives unfolds, offering diverse perspectives on a devastating event. The narratives seamlessly come together to explore the various ways people cope with tragedy and the healing power of unity. Ideal for middle school students, this book provides valuable insights into the complexities of grief and the strength that can be found in coming together.

30,000 Stitches – Amanda Davis


This gorgeous picture book narrates the story of the American flag, which proudly flew over Ground Zero and across the nation, symbolizing hope’s resurgence in people’s lives. It delves into the flag’s rich history and its capacity to heal and unite hearts through its powerful symbolism.
