Summer is upon us, and for upper elementary and middle school students, it marks a well-deserved break from the rigors of the academic year. While relaxation and fun are essential during this time, it’s also an excellent opportunity to nurture a love for reading and enhance literacy skills. As an educator and a passionate advocate for fostering a lifelong appreciation for literature, I believe that summer themed literacy activities can be both enjoyable and educationally enriching.

Summer Reading Reviews

Book reviews are a great way to add a little writing to your summer literacy plans. After your students have read a book with a summer theme, have them write a book review. They can share their thoughts on the plot, characters, and setting, and even recommend the book to their classmates. Encourage them to use persuasive language to convince others to read the book.
