What are Mini Book Activities for Elementary?

Mini Books are small, stapled books that students create themselves. There are a wide range of topics available, allowing you to tailor them specifically to your curriculum. Teachers can pick and choose from the pages to include. Also, teachers can differentiate for their learners by choosing filled pages, fill in pages, or a mixture of both.

The differentiation piece is really helpful. As most teachers know, we never have a class full of learners who are all at the same level. Having choices about what types of pages to give to each student to meet their individual needs is a lifesaver.

Sometimes I have learners in my room that really struggle with written output. Giving them the pages that already have the writing filled in can be incredibly helpful for them. This way, they can still receive the same content as their peers, without getting bogged down with the writing piece. Sometimes I will include a few pages they need to fill in, and give them the rest of the pages already completed. This way they can still have a bit of writing practice, but not so much that the task becomes overwhelming.

Using Mini books for Writing Practice

Copying information down from the board is a skill that definitely needs to be taught and practiced in elementary school. It is an essential skill that we often assume students know how to do, and sometimes forget to explicitly teach.

These mini book activities for elementary work great for this. Each day, you can choose a new page from the mini book you are working on, write the information on the board, and have students copy down the information. When they are done, they can color the fun clipart, staple their books together, and take them home to share with their parents. Alternately, students can practice reading their books and share them with a buddy class – my students have always enjoyed sharing their new found knowledge!

Guided Research Activities

These mini book activities for elementary also work great for guided research. Because unfilled information pages are included, students can use the prompts to aid their own research on the topic. You can put some books out on the topic your mini book covers, or even have students do some online research. When complete, students have fun little fact books full of research they have gathered on their own.

The Country Study and Animal Study mini books available in my store also come with mapping activities, comprehension questions, and graphic organizers. These make excellent early finisher or extension activities for students needing a bit more of a challenge!

Mini Books for Center Activities

These mini book activities for elementary make great center activities! Each day, simply laminate one of the filled information pages, and place it in your writing center along with a stack of the blank pages. During center time, students can fill out their information page and color the clipart. At the end of the week, students can staple their mini fact books together to take home and share with their families. This is excellent for writing practice and early fact gathering skill development!
