How can I use these graphic organizers?

I created these resources in response to teachers seeking extra materials to accompany the novel studies in my TPT shop. They excellently enhance your ongoing favorite novel study with your learners! That said, you can also utilize them in numerous other ways, such as:

Early Finisher Activities

Looking for something engaging for your early finishers, that is also rigorous? These graphic organizers are perfect to copy and keep in a stack at the back of your classroom. Early finishers can simply pop over and grab one to extend their learning about the novel they are reading.

Read Aloud Responses

Do your students need something to keep their minds and hands busy during a read loud? These graphic organizers are perfect to help focus students while you read a text aloud to the group.

Homework

Need a quick homework assignment to send home? Simply grab one of these organizers and send it home with your learners. Students can complete it using a novel you are currently reading as a class. Alternately, they can use them with a book they are reading at home.

Absent Student Packets

Did one of your students recently become sick and go home or head out on vacation? Are you in need of a quick work packet to send with them? Just gather some of these graphic organizers, staple them together, and include a copy of the class novel they’re reading. This ensures that students have engaging activities to complete during their absence. Moreover, they can seamlessly rejoin the class novel study when they return. The added advantage? You won’t find yourself rushing around at the eleventh hour, attempting to photocopy the upcoming weeks’ worth of assignments (which you might not have even prepared yet…).

Sub Folder Activities

No time to plan elaborate activities for a sub? No problem! Just duplicate a selection of these graphic organizers and place them in your substitute folder. If you need to be absent, the substitute will have an array of activities that they can effortlessly print and instruct, alongside any novel they select.

Reading Comprehension Strategy Practice

If you checked out my previous posts, you already know how passionate I am about the explicit instruction of reading comprehension strategies. When it comes to ELA instruction, teaching students to apply reading comprehension strategies is crucially important. These strategies are necessary for our students to grow to become self-monitoring and independent readers. Through active modeling and practice, reading comprehension strategies can have a huge learning impact for both our avid and reluctant readers.

A variety of different graphic organizers to practice reading strategies like summarizing, visualizing, and connecting are included in this resource.

Examining Literary Elements

When teaching fiction, it is important to move past basic comprehension. Instead of simply asking students what they are reading, they need to be asked to analyze the text. By looking closely at literary elements, students are able to dive deep into the text. This helps students develop a deeper understanding of what they are reading.

Graphic organizers to help students to focus on key aspects of character, setting, and plot are included in this FREE resource.
