Arrive Early

Arriving at school well before the start of the day allows you to familiarize yourself with the classroom, materials, and lesson plans left by the regular teacher. Being punctual also sets a positive example for students and demonstrates your commitment to their education.

Sometimes, you will be substituting for a class when the teacher is at a meeting or other event in the building. Arriving early gives allows you time to meet with the teacher and go over the plans before the students arrive.

Be Flexible

Flexibility is key in substitute teaching. Be prepared for changes in lesson plans, unexpected disruptions, or last-minute adjustments. Sometimes there can be things like fire drills, student pullouts, or other unexpected interruptions during the day. Adaptability will help you maintain a calm and effective classroom environment, even when things don’t go according to plan.

Establish clear expectations

Start the day by setting clear expectations for behavior and academic engagement. Let students know your rules and consequences Doing this will help to ensure a respectful and conducive learning atmosphere.

Build positive relationships

Take the time to get to know the students by asking about their names, interests, and any special needs. Building positive relationships fosters trust and helps manage classroom dynamics more effectively. Relationship building really is the key to effective classroom management.

Follow the lesson plan

When it comes to tips for substitute teachers, this one might be the most important. Carefully follow the lesson plan left by the regular teacher. Nothing is more frustrating for a teacher than returning from an absence and discovering their day plans have not been followed.

If there isn’t a day plan left for you, have a few backup activities or educational games on hand to keep students engaged and on track.

Maintain classroom Discipline

Consistent classroom management is crucial. Address disruptive behavior calmly and fairly, and use positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior. Don’t be afraid to seek guidance from school staff or the principal if needed.

Communicate with school Staff

Stay in touch with the school’s administrative team, office staff, and fellow teachers. They can provide valuable insights, support, and guidance during your time as a substitute.

Leave Detailed notes

At the end of the day, leave a detailed note for the regular teacher, summarizing what was covered, any issues that arose, and any unfinished tasks or concerns. Effective communication ensures a smooth transition when the teacher returns.

Reflect and Learn

After each substitute teaching assignment, take some time to reflect on your experience. Consider what worked well and what could be improved. Continuous learning and self-improvement are essential in becoming a successful substitute teacher.
