Summer Learning Loss and How Writing Can Help

By MARISSA DESPINS Updated Oct 16, 2023

Summer break is a much-needed respite for students after a long academic year, but it can also result in a phenomenon known as summer learning loss. During this time, students lose academic skills and knowledge due to lack of practice, which can result in students returning to school with low skills or skills they have forgotten.

Benefits of writing over the Summer

Check out some of the key benefits of encouraging students to write over the summer below.

Improves writing skills

Writing regularly over the summer can improve students’ writing skills by providing opportunities to practice and receive feedback. By writing, students can hone their writing techniques, such as using proper grammar, punctuation, and syntax. Additionally, writing allows students to express themselves more effectively and develop their own unique writing style.

Increases Creativity

Summer break is an excellent time for students to explore their creativity and imagination through writing. Creative writing prompts, such as “write a story about a magical summer vacation” or “describe your dream summer day,” can inspire students to think outside the box and develop their creativity. By writing creatively, students can enhance their storytelling abilities and explore new ideas and perspectives.

Boosts critical thinking

Writing requires students to analyze and interpret information and use critical thinking skills to communicate their ideas effectively. Writing prompts that require students to argue a point or present evidence can help students develop their critical thinking skills. Through writing, students can learn to evaluate information and form their own opinions based on facts and evidence.

Enhances Self-Expression

Writing allows students to express their thoughts, feelings, and ideas in a safe and creative way. For students who struggle with expressing themselves verbally, writing can be an outlet for their emotions and help them develop their communication skills. Additionally, writing can help students build self-confidence by allowing them to share their work with others and receive positive feedback.

Tips and strategies for encouraging summer writing

Check out some teaching tips and strategies for encouraging students to wrote over the summer below.

Set Writing Goals

Setting writing goals can help students stay motivated and track their progress over the summer. Teachers can encourage their students to set achievable goals, such as writing for 30 minutes every day or completing a certain number of writing prompts each week. By setting goals, students can develop a regular writing habit and improve their writing skills.

Provide Writing Prompts

Providing writing prompts can help students overcome writer’s block and spark their creativity. Teachers can provide a range of prompts, such as personal narratives, persuasive essays, and descriptive writing, to encourage students to explore different writing styles and techniques. Additionally, teachers can provide prompts that are relevant to the summer season, such as writing about summer vacations or activities.

Offer Incentives or Feedback

Offering incentives or feedback can help motivate students to write and improve their writing skills. Teachers can offer small rewards for completing writing prompts or achieving writing goals, such as stickers or bookmarks. Additionally, teachers can provide feedback on students’ writing, such as pointing out strengths and areas for improvement. By receiving positive feedback, students can build self-confidence and develop their writing skills.

Summer learning loss can be a challenge for teachers and students, but writing can help combat this phenomenon and keep students engaged and practicing their skills over the summer. With the power of writing, students can not only prevent summer learning loss but also discover new ideas and perspectives, explore their creativity, and develop their communication skills.
